Privacy Policy
Last Updated: October 18, 2026
Effective Date: January 2026
Introduction
Piccolo Music Reader (“App”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App handles, how it is used, and who can access it when you use our music sheet reading application for Android.
Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, please do not use our App.
1. Information We Collect
In short: the App works on your device. We have no servers, no accounts, no analytics, and we do not receive your files or your data.
1.1 Information You Provide
PDF Files & Annotations:
- Your PDF music sheets, folder structures, annotations, bookmarks, last-read page and settings are stored entirely on your device
- We do NOT collect, store, transmit, or have access to your PDF files or personal annotations
- All data remains under your control in your device’s local storage
- The App keeps its data in its own app storage (a SQLite database and your PDF files). Your sheets and a library file (
piccolo-library.json: folders, annotations, bookmarks, page crops) are also saved in the Documents/PiccoloReader folder of your device, so you can recover them after reinstalling the app. They never leave your device through the app
Account Information:
- Piccolo Music Reader does NOT require user accounts, registration, or login
- We do NOT collect email addresses, usernames, or passwords
- We do NOT collect payment information (the app is free)
1.2 Microphone (Tuner)
- The App asks for the microphone permission (
RECORD_AUDIO) only to power the tuner - The microphone is used only while the tuner is active, and only after you grant the permission
- Audio is analyzed in real time on your device to detect the pitch of a note. It is NOT recorded, stored, or sent anywhere
- You can revoke the permission at any time in your Android settings; the rest of the App keeps working
1.3 Sharing Sheets
When you share a sheet (the original or an annotated PDF), the App hands the file to the app you pick in the Android share sheet. From that point, the privacy policy of the receiving app applies. We do not receive the file.
1.4 Information Collected Automatically
Google AdMob (Donate Page Only):
The optional Donate page displays ads powered by Google AdMob. Ads are never shown in the reader. When ads load, Google may collect:
- Device identifiers, such as the advertising ID
- IP address
- Device and app information (for example device model, OS version and app version)
Google uses this data under its own privacy policy, for example to serve and measure ads, prevent fraud and, where you allow it, personalize ads. More information:
What We Collect:
- We do NOT have access to Google’s detailed user data
- We do NOT receive this data ourselves; we only see aggregated ad performance figures in our AdMob account
Important: Ads are optional. Users can disable them in Settings → “Support with ads” toggle. Internet and network state permissions are used only to load ads.
1.5 Crash and Performance Data
- The App itself does NOT send crash reports, error logs, analytics, or usage data to us or to any third party
- Google Play may provide us with aggregated crash and performance data (Android vitals) from users who have chosen to share usage and diagnostics data with app developers in their Android settings. This is Google’s mechanism, not the App’s, and you control it in your Android settings
2. How We Use Your Information
The App uses the data on your device to:
- Provide the Service:
- Displaying and running the Piccolo Music Reader app
- Storing your sheets locally on your device
- Rendering PDFs and annotations
- Detecting pitch in the tuner
- Advertising (Donate Page):
- Showing ads to support development, through Google AdMob, if you leave ads enabled
We do NOT:
- Sell your data
- Share your data or files with third parties (we do not hold any)
- Use your data for marketing
- Build user profiles
3. How We Protect Your Information
3.1 Local Storage Security
- Your PDF files are stored in the Documents/PiccoloReader folder of your device’s shared storage, and the app keeps a working copy in its private directory
- Other apps that you allow to access your device’s files (for example a file manager) can see the Documents/PiccoloReader folder
- Your device’s built-in security (lock screen, encryption) protects this data
- If you uninstall the app, the app’s private copy is deleted, but the Documents/PiccoloReader folder stays on your device so you can recover your library with “Recover library from folder” in the app
- On Android 6-9 the app asks for the storage permission to write to this folder; on Android 10 and later it needs no permission to write, and uses the system folder picker only when you recover your library
3.2 No Cloud Storage
- Piccolo Music Reader does NOT upload files to servers
- Your data is NOT backed up to cloud services by the app
- We do NOT have the ability to access your sheets
- Your data stays on your device
3.3 No Encryption Within App
- PDF files are stored as-is (not encrypted within the app)
- Your device’s operating system encryption protects the data
- If you use device-level encryption (recommended), files are encrypted automatically
3.4 Network Communications
- The App has no servers and does not communicate with any server of ours
- The only network traffic is the ad requests made by the Google AdMob SDK on the Donate page, which uses HTTPS
4. Third-Party Services
4.1 Google AdMob
- Service: Advertisement delivery (Donate page only)
- Data Shared: Device identifiers such as the advertising ID, IP address, device and app information, collected by Google
- Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- More information: https://support.google.com/admob/answer/6128543
- Opt-Out: Settings → Toggle “Support with ads” OFF
- Consent (EEA, UK, Switzerland): Where required, Google’s consent form (User Messaging Platform) asks whether ads may be personalized. You can change your choice anytime in Settings → “Ad Privacy Options”, which appears only in those regions
4.2 Google Play
- Service: App distribution
- Data: Google Play may share aggregated crash and performance data (Android vitals) with us from users who opted in to share usage and diagnostics data in their Android settings
- Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
4.3 Open Source Libraries
Piccolo Music Reader uses open-source libraries (SkiaSharp, SQLite, etc.) that run on your device. The App does not use them to send data anywhere.
5. Your Rights & Choices
5.1 Access & Control
- Your Data: All your sheets are stored locally on YOUR device
- Download: PDFs you imported remain in your device storage
- Delete: Deleting a sheet in the app also deletes its PDF from Documents/PiccoloReader. Uninstalling the app deletes its private data but not the Documents/PiccoloReader folder, which you can delete yourself at any time
- Export: Your PDFs are regular files in Documents/PiccoloReader; you can copy them anywhere
5.2 Advertising Preferences
- Disable Ads: Settings → “Support with ads” toggle OFF
- Google Ads Personalization: Manage at https://myaccount.google.com/ads
- Reset or Limit Advertising ID: Android Settings → Privacy → Ads → Delete advertising ID (the exact path varies by device)

- Right to Delete: Request deletion of your data

- Do NOT knowingly collect data from children under 13 (COPPA)
- Recommend parental oversight for children under 13
The only third-party data collection is by Google AdMob on the optional Donate page. Parents can:
- Disable ads (Settings → “Support with ads” OFF)
- Revoke the microphone permission in Android settings
- Delete app data anytime by uninstalling
Because we hold no data, we have nothing to delete on our side. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us and we will help.
7. Data Retention
- Local Data: Stored on your device until you delete it (including the Documents/PiccoloReader folder)
- Developer: We retain no user data
- Ad Serving Data: Retained by Google per https://policies.google.com/privacy
8. International Data Transfer
We do not collect or transfer your data. Your PDF files and annotations stay on your device. Data that Google collects for ads is processed by Google, which may transfer it internationally under its own privacy policy.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy periodically to reflect:
- New features or services
- Changes in privacy law
- Feedback from users
Changes will be effective upon posting. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
